Devoted to The Last American
Highway
U.S. Route 83 runs 1,885 miles from the Canadian border just north of
Westhope, N.D. to Brownsville, Texas, on the Mexican border. (Or from
Brownsville, Texas to Canada depending on your point of view). It is one
of the last and longest stretch
es of highway in America and little of
it is spoiled by soulless four-lane Interstate. It passes through North
Dakota, South Dakota, the Lakota Nation on the Rosebud Reservation,
Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas.
The U.S. Route 83 Travel Page is devoted to promoting the highway as an interesting place to explore. Along it, travelers will find 125 communities with some of the friendliest people in the country. The sweeping views of the prairies, the stunning Sand Hills of Nebraska, Texas Hill Country and the Rio Grande Valley are some of the highlights. There is history for the historically minded, wildlife for the nature lovers, and plenty of good eats for the hungry.
Route 83 intersects with every major east-to-west railroad, Interstate and several historic pioneer trails and river valleys.
Its peoples and history are diverse, ranging from the European pioneer cultures in the north, Native American at the Rosebud Reservation, and the Mexican-American influence in the south.
This is the land of German, Russian, Irish and African-American immigrants, and Native American tribes such as the Lakotas, the Mandans, Arikaras, Hidatsas, Pawnees, Apaches and Comanches.
The highway follows in the footsteps of Lewis and Clark, Buffalo Bill Cody, Chief Spotted Tail, Jedediah Smith, Francisco Vasquez de Coronado and numerous other historical figures.
